The lottery for overnight camping in the Enchantments area of the Alpine Lake Wilderness will open at 7 a.m., Saturday, with the special permits again likely to be a hot commodity.
Forest Service Wilderness and Camping Program Manager Carly Reed says demand for the permits far exceeds the number available, so the preseason lottery is necessary.
You can enter the lottery through Feb. 29 on the recreation.gov website.
The results of the lottery will be released April 1.
“When applying for a permit in the Core Enchantments area make sure to indicate the minimum number of people in your group as that number cannot be changed at a later date. The entry quota is allocated by person, not group, as it is in the other four zones. Also, an alternate group leader must be identified during the lottery application process. Alternate group leaders may not apply for a permit or reserve a permit in the same season, and alternate group leaders cannot be added or changed after the application is submitted,” Reed said.
Permits for day hikes are available at trailheads and available without going through a lottery.
The Forest Service says it’s necessary to limit overnight visits to the Enchantments to protect sensitive areas from over-use.
