NORTH CENTRAL WASHINGTON- A severe winter storm bringing what forecasters predict as seven to 10 inches of snow to the Wenatchee Valley and even more in the Cascade valleys and mountains, a number of schools are cancelling after school programs.
-Wenatchee School District: No after school programs or activities on Wednesday. All high school/middle school games are cancelled. After School Program buses are canceled.
-Lake Chelan School District: Students will be released early due to weather conditions. Morgen Owings Elementary students will be released at 1:45 p.m.
-Manson School DIstrict: All after school activities and afters transportation has been canceled for Wednesday. This includes the Manson Trojans basketball game against Soap Lake, tentatively rescheduled for 6p.m. on Thursday in the Manson High School gym. Also the public levy meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. at the high school gym is canceled.
-Brewster School District: School will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday. Buses, breakfast and other morning programs will begin two hours late.
-Soap Lake School District: There will be no after school activities and the district boys basketball game has been rescheduled for Feb 9th in Manson.
-Entiat School District: After school practices and activities have been canceled today. School will start 2 hours late Thursday, a 10:15 a.m. start time.
Eastmont School District: All after-school activities Wednesday have been canceled and student care parents are asked to pick up their children as soon as it is safe to do so. A decision for Thursday will be made by 6 a.m. and announced using the district website, social media, text and staff emergency phone tree. No information means the district is on a regular schedule.
Also, the Wenatchee Valley Senior Activity Center will be closed Thursday.
The WSDOT announced that due to avalanche danger it will close Highway 2 at Tumwater Canyon at 6 p.m. tonight in both directions from milepost 85 at Coles Corner to milepost 99 at the west end of Leavenworth.
There is a detour available using the Chumstick Highway and Highway 207. Chelan County Public Works reminds the public that no vehicles over 26,000 gross vehicle weight are permitted on the detour route.
There is no current estimated time for reopening Tumwater Canyon and the roadway will be reassessed Thursday morning.
Substantial snowfall over the last five days has kept county crews busy throughout Chelan County. Crews at this time are conducting snow and ice control on school bus routes and major arterials throughout the county. Residents are reminded that some local access roads may not be plowed or sanded until the early morning hours because local snowplowing efforts are focused on those priority routes.
