Wind driving major brush fire burning near Rock Island

Crews from multiple agencies are fighting a major wind-whipped brush fire near Rock Island.

Some Level 1 evacuation notices in the area have been issued, meaning be prepared.

The first call on the fire came shortly after 6 p.m. and before 7 a second alarm went out.

The fire started near South Wells Street and Eighth Street Southeast, above Pear Lane.

The Level 1 notice went to residents between Woodstone Lane to Van Sickle Avenue and Rock Island Road to Batterman Road.

Thus far, there have been no confirmed structures burned but there was an earlier unconfirmed report of barn on fire, said Kay McKellar, public information officer for Douglas County Fire District 2.

Crew from numerous fire agencies are on the scene.

Officials believe the fire may have started after the remains of an orchard burn were ignited by the strong winds.

But McKellar said that also has not yet been confirmed.
