Wind-driven Douglas County wildfire reaches 2,000 acres

MANSFIELD — A large brush blaze dubbed the Road 11 Fire reached 2,000 acres Saturday afternoon as winds drove it east from its starting point, burning between Withrow and Mansfield.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported the fire burning west of Highway 172 near Rd ‪11 NW and Road E NW, about 2:30 p.m. Nearby residents were placed under Level 2 evacuation notices, warning them to be ready to depart their homes.

The fire quickly led to the closure of McNeil Canyon Road to keep firefighter access. By 3:30 p.m.. the fire had reached 2,000 acres and jumped Highway 172, burning east with a shift in the wind, the sheriff’s office said.

Just after 4 p.m. deputies closed Highway 172 at Road B NE, and said outbuildings had been lost, but no homes. Motorists should avoid the area and find alternate routes.
