Arch Ecker Tells The Story

(Merritt, British Columbia)…After not allowing a single shot on goal for nearly 8:00 minutes to start the game, the Wenatchee Wild saw the Merritt Centennials score twice on their first two shots for a 2-0 lead, and eventually snap their own nine game winless streak with a 4-1 win at Nicola Valley Memorial Arena.

Merritt’s leading scorer Cade Gleekel entered the zone on the left wing on a power play, drifted to his right slightly and fired a shot past Garrett Nieto through a bit of traffic at 7:55 for the 1-0 lead on Merritt’s first official shot on goal. Thirty seconds later, former Wild defenseman Aaron Murray took a shot from the left point that Nieto had squeeze through his pads where Henry Cleghorn poked it home for a 2-0 lead on two shots, prompting the Wild coaching staff to bring Anthony Yamnitsky on in relief. Merritt added a second power play goal on an odd man rush, with Zach Bleuler picking the top glove side corner and the Centennials led 3-0. After that goal, Wenatchee elected to spend their time out. The score remained 3-0 at the end of the first.

Beginning the second period on the tail end of a carryover power play, AJ Vanderbeck rifled home his sixteenth of the year from Troy Conzo and Chris Jones on the power play :29 seconds into the period, high on the blocker side to make it 3-1 but that score remained at the end of the second period.

Merritt added a fourth goal in the final period to ice the win, muscled home by Michael Regush after a turnover at 11:04, ending their nine game winless streak (0-7-2-0).

Wenatchee (17-4-1-0) continues their road swing Saturday night at West Kelowna (10-11-1-0) at 7:00, then wrap up the trip Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm in Salmon Arm.
