Wenatchee schools adding second police officer

Wenatchee School District will beef up its campus security this year with the addition of a second school resource officer.

The contract with the City of Wenatchee for a new officer was approved by the board last week.

The city and school district will share the cost

Superintendent Paul Gordon says it’s the best move for the district and that the addition of a second school resource officer will allow for greater coverage of the middle and elementary schools.

An additional officer also will increased parent engagement and student relationship building, he said.

Board member Laura Jaecks said its better to be safe than sorry in today’s world.

“It’s unfortunate that we live in a day and age where resource officers are needed in our district for the protection and safety of our staff and students,” Jaecks said. “But it’s the reality we live in.”

The board gave its OK by a unanimous vote.
