Wenatchee School District Traffic Advisory: Watch Out For After School Program Students

Drivers in the Wenatchee area will soon notice lights flashing in school zones later in the day in addition to the regular morning and afternoon hours due to release of students attending After School Programs. Over 1,000 students attend the Federally funded Program.

In addition to the all-school afternoon release times, which range from around 2:30 to 3:30 PM, students will be walking home from around 4:45 to 5:15 PM. These later release times mean children will be walking along streets in the dusk or dark hours. Bus transportation is provided for most students but not all, so it is important for drivers to be extra vigilant when these evening lights are active.

Morning hours, which range from about 7:00 AM to 8:15 may also be in darkness during the short, winter days. Flashing lights in school zones reduce the legal speed limit to 20 MPH. Whenever children are present drivers should exert extra caution.

If you have any questions please call Mark Helm, Executive Director of Students Services at the Wenatchee School District office (509) 663-8161.
