Waterman Makes Circus Catch in Sox Debut

WENATCHEE, WA – Sam Waterman was the only bright spot in a dark-but-sunny day for the AppleSox Tuesday.  Maybe it would have been better to get another rain-out in Portland yesterday for the AppleSox. Wenatchee lost both ends of a makeup doubleheader to the Pickles. In the opener…
SOX-1
Portland centerfielder Joey Cooper had a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd and the Pickles went on for a 3-0 win over Wenatchee. Connor Pellerin took advantage of the shortened, 7-inning game to earn the win on the mound, going 4-innings of scoreless ball, striking out 8 and allowing just 2-hits.

Grady Miller took the loss for the AppleSox, allowing 3-runs on 4-hits in 4-and-2/3rds with 6-strikeouts.  The only highlight of the day for Wenatchee, and maybe the play of the SEASON, was the catch in DEEP left field by Sam Waterman on a ball hit by the Pickle’s Daniel Lopez…

Certainly should be a SportsCenter Top10. Voice of the AppleSox Joel Norman with the play-by-play and video courtesy the Portland Pickles.

In the nightcap, however, the highlights belonged to Portland…
SOX-2
Brad McVay and two other Pickles Pitchers combined on a 1-hit shutout as Portland beat Wenatchee 9-0. Carson Breshears helped the Pickles play add-on in the 4th. Jamie Flynn has the play-by-play…

Wenatchee dropped to 2-and-3 with the sweep and now heads to Corvallis for the first of three games tonight. Curtis Bafus will get the start for the AppleSox against the Knight’s Aaron Shoup. First pitch is at 6:35.

AppleSox Fall to 5th in West Coast League’s North

Also in West Coast League Play last night as we turn to the Les Schwab Scoreboard…
WCL
Cowlitz held on to beat Port Angeles 4-3 and in a non-league game, Yakima Valley beat the Northwest Honkers by three field goals, 13-7. The sweep by Portland dropped the AppleSox to 2-games out of first place behind Yakima Valley. The Lefties are a half-game back. Bellingham is 5-and-4 at a game back while Victoria is a game-and-a-half back.

Besides Wenatchee at Corvallis today, it’s Cowlitz at Port Angeles; Bellingham at Bend; Kelowna hosts Victoria; and Yakima Valley is at Portland.

Nelson Cruz Smacks Two Homers in Seattle’s 5-3 Win

Nelson Cruz hit two home runs and the Seattle Mariners came from behind to beat the L-A Angels 5-3 at Safeco Field Monday night…
MARINERS
Mike Trout and Albert Pujols homered back-to-back in the top of the first to spot the Angels a 2-0 lead. But Cruz helped Seattle come back in the bottom of the first with a 2-run home run to tie it at 2. Cruz and Ryon Healy homered in the 4th to put Seattle up 5-2. Trout homered again in the 8th to make the final score 5-3.

Manager Scott Servais says he was really happy his club bounced back…

Cruz has homered in 4 of his last 6-games and Servais he certainly looks like he’s feeling good…

Seattle and L-A play again tonight at 7:10 with Mike Leake facing Jaime (HIGH-me) Barria (BAH-REE-uh).

Houston was idle last night so the M’s gained a half-game in the American League West…
