DOUGLAS COUNTY – The Douglas County prosecutor’s office has received the investigative report into the fatal shooting of a man by an East Wenatchee police officer back in early September.
Prosecutor Steve Clem will determine if any charges will be brought against the officer, Kaiti Wilkins who shot and killed 25-year-old Cameron Ayers of East Wenatchee. The shooting occured at about 2 a.m. Sept. 3 as he sat in the back seat of a car parked in a driveway in the 200 block of Bellevue Street Northwest.
Investigators were still waiting for some material, including shell casings found at the scene and the gun used by Wilkins which will be tested for any malfunctions. They are also waiting on the toxicology report on the man who was killed, and a report on the vehicle the man was sitting in.
At the time of the shooting, a warrant had been issued for Ayers, charging him with escape from community custody which meant he had failed to check in with his probation officer.
Investigators have already interviewed the two other people in the car at the time of the shooting, along with a state Department of Corrections officer who was riding with officer Wilkins.
No video of the shooting is available. Wilkins was not wearing a body camera and her patrol car was not equipped with a dashboard camera.
Prosecutor Clem says it will take about a week for him to complete his review.
