Traffic continues to be detoured around an accident on Highway 97 near Orondo that sent two people to the hospital with minor injuries this morning.

Washington State Patrol Trooper John Bryant said a Suburban driven by Patrick Smith, 70, of Waterville pulled onto Highway 97 from the stop sign at Highway 2 about 10:41 a.m. and hit a northbound semi.

Both vehicles suffered extensive damage, blocking both lanes of the highway. Despite having a detour in place the wreck has caused traffic backups, Bryant said.

Both Smith and his passenger, a 78-year-old Waterville woman, were transported to Central Washington Hospital but Bryant said their injuries were not serious.

The driver of the semi, Jarnail Samra, 55, of Sacramento, Calif., was not injured.

Smith was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Bryant said he expected the highway to be reopened by 2:30 p.m.
