Orondo firefighters and the Washington State Patrol responded to a pair of accidents on Highway 97 Sunday and Monday, one involving a vehicle that went into a ditch and burst into flames and the other a near head-on collision that hospitalized two.

About 4:15 Monday afternoon, a 2019 Kia Rio being driven by Drew Hooper, 28, of Wenatchee crashed off the highway about 10 miles north of Orondo and burst into flames, which then ignited a brush fire.

Trooper John Bryant said Hooper and a passenger ran into a nearby orchard but were quickly apprehended.

He said Hooper was arrested for drunken driving.

Firefighters from Orondo were able to put out the brush fire before it could spread.

On Sunday just before 7 a.m. in about the same area on Highway 97, a northbound 2002 Toyota 4-Runner being driven by William Price, 20, of Auburn veered into the southbound lane where it clipped a 2012 Dodge Journey being driven by Amelia Christian, 79, of Quincy.

Bryant said the vehicles just missed colliding head-on.

Bryant said Christian and a passenger were taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee with non-life-threatening injuries.

Price was cited for second-degree negligent driving.
