State wildlife euthanize Leavenworth’s Enchantment Park bear

On June 6th last week in Leavenworth’s Enchantment Park, a jogger jumped into the river as a bear approached. State wildlife officials euthanized the bear Wednesday. Captain Mike Jewell of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Police said the bear had a pattern of being aggressive toward humans and eating human-made food. Additionally, he said the bear likely would have returned to the area even if they had relocated her.

State wildlife tranquilized the bear in a tree near the park early Wednesday morning, then killed her. Subsequently, they captured her two offspring, estimated at 16 to 18 months old, and relocated them to an undisclosed area. Jewell said it was unfortunate they had to kill the mother, but public safety was the first priority.
