The Washington Legislature is scheduled to adjourn Sunday, and with Democrats in control of both houses Senator Brad Hawkins says they’re likely to do so without a special session for the first time in years. But one big unresolved issue is the amount of property taxes local school districts can collect. The Legislature capped that at 1.5 percent two years ago while increasing state property taxes to meet its school funding obligations under the McCleary decision. But that left several districts, including Wenatchee, with a budget deficit to deal with. Hawkins told NCWLIFE’s Cal FitzSimmons the issue remains equity for school districts and raising the levy limits is not the answer.
