A semi went off Highway 174 in Grand Coulee just after noon Thursday, first hitting a parked car that burst into flames, then crashing into a building.
The unidentified driver of the semi was seriously injured and had to be taken by air ambulance to a hospital, said Trooper John Bryant of the Washington State Patrol.
He said the investigation into what happened has been hampered by the inability to talk to the semi driver.
There were no other injuries and Bryant said he believes the building that was hit was vacant. A Grant County Sheriff’s deputy was first on the scene, followed by aid crews, Bryant said.
The driver of the semi initially was trapped and had to extricated from the vehicle, which was carrying a load of apples.
The truck also leaked some fuel that went into a nearby small creek.
“We have several things going on in this collision,” Bryant said. “It’s going to take a little while to piece this all together.”
