Scammers using State Patrol caller ID to make bomb threat

Someone is calling people across the state with a bomb threat that comes up on caller ID as being from the Washington State Patrol.

The State Patrol said Tuesday the purpose of the recorded call is to get people to visit a suspicious website.

Called spoofing, the hijacking of a legitimate phone number is illegal.

The State Patrol advises anyone who receives such a call to avoid the website it is trying to get you to visit and report the call to law enforcement.

The State Patrol said using a State Patrol caller ID is designed to confuse or frighten potential victims.

The caller, in a British accent, says: “Twenty-one hours ago, we placed three pocket-sized explosive devices in three different locations around you. To stay alive go to (website address).”
