Rural Douglas County man charged with rape after alleged victim flees

Riley Jay Kalk: Charged with rape and weapons offenses in Douglas County.

WATERVILLE — A rural Mansfield man is charged with rape after a woman allegedly escaped from a trailer where he handcuffed and sexually assaulted her.

Riley Jay Kalk, 65, is accused of keeping the woman captive and sexually abusing her at gunpoint, after offering to let her stay in an RV on the 20 acres he owns near the Columbia Bluffs. Douglas County sheriff’s deputies say the woman slipped away when he unchained her and drove with her to the Chelan Walmart on Saturday.

Kalk has a criminal history dating back to a 1977 burglary conviction in New York and a 1992 assault conviction in Washington. In 2010 he was sentenced to 31 months in prison on Douglas County charges of illegally owning firearms. Deputies said when they investigated his property Sunday under a search warrant, they found 10 more illicit firearms, including handguns, shotguns and rifles.

Prosecutors charged Kalk on Tuesday with first-degree rape, unlawful imprisonment, and unlawful firearm possession. He’s held in the Okanogan County Jail on $100,000 bond.
