Race for mayor of George could come down to a coin flip

The race for mayor of George could be decided by a coin flip.

Whether that coin will be a quarter featuring George Washington is unclear.

After the latest, and final, machine count incumbent Mayor Gerene Nelson is tied 28-28 with Don Entzel.

Interestingly, there was one write-in vote for someone else for mayor.

Grant County has a an estimated 20 votes left to count but none of those votes are from George, said Grant County Auditor Michele Jaderlund.

When the election is certified Nov. 26 at 1 p.m., there will be an automatic manual recount, she said.

If it’s still tied after the recount, state law says the winner will be decided “by lot.”

In this case, that will mean a coin flip, Jaderlund said.

Nelson, who was first elected mayor in 2015 trailed Entzel by one vote, 22-21 after the Nov. 6 election day count.

But subsequent counts threw the race into a tie.
