NCW — County auditors held their first tally of primary election votes Tuesday, after the 8 p.m.. deadline passed for return of ballots in the vote-by-mail election. The top two vote-getters in each race advance to the general election in November.

Although thousands of ballots remain uncounted as of Tuesday night, with the next counts due to commence Friday, Republican challenger Loren Culp appeared likely to take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee, earning 207,448 or 16.7 percent of the initial count. Inslee took 645,659 initial votes, or almost 52 percent in a field of 36 candidates.
