Pregnant Ephrata woman in head-on collision with semi

A 21-year-old pregnant Ephrata woman was hospitalized Wednesday morning after her vehicle was in a head-on collision with a semi-truck.

The accident happened at 8:15 a.m. on Highway 17 near Neppel Road south of Ephrata.

Araceli Valverde Velentin’s 2009 Chevy Cobalt spun on the highway into the path of a semi, said Washington State Patrol Trooper John Bryant.

The truck, which was hauling fruit, was being driven 27-year-old Mark Jones of Spokane.

Bryant said Valentin was not injured but taken to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake as a precaution due to her pregnancy.

Her car was totaled and the semi will need repairs before being fit for driving again.

Why Valentin lost control of her car is unclear, Bryant said. But she was cited for causing the accident.
