Phone scam bilks Wenatchee woman out of thousands

WENATCHEE — Chelan County sheriff’s detectives say an 88-year-old Wenatchee woman fell prey to telephone scam that cost her almost $30,000.

Back in August, the victim received a series of phone calls saying a family friend was under arrest in Florida, and that she could help … first by buying $8,000 worth of Macy’s gift cards at the Wenatchee Valley Mall, and later by wiring $25,000 to a bank account in Miami.

Her family learned of the scam, but was only able to recover $4,000 of the lost funds. Deputies have gathered bank records to help with the investigation. However, no suspects have been named.
