Party campaigns for Manweller, who will resign if he’s elected Tuesday

State Rep. Matt Manweller says he’ll resign if he’s elected to another term but that hasn’t stopped the Republican Party from campaigning for him.

Manweller’s campaign website automatically redirects visitors to the Kittitas County GOP site, where voters are urged to “Check the Manweller box” in the race for the 13th Legislative District seat.

Manweller was fired from his teaching job at Central Washington University in August after an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations.

His opponent on the ballot is Democrat Sylvia Hammond.

If Manweller wins, then resigns, Republicans will choose his replacement. They’ve already begun that process by narrowing a finalist list down to three, The Ellensburg Daily Record reports.

The party’s first choice is Danny Stone, a wheat farmer and pastor. Also being considered are Alex Ybarra, a Quincy School Board member, and Ian Elliott, a former state lawmaker.
