WENATCHEE- It was rodeo time earlier today at Chelan County Public Works… but not the kind of rodeo you might think. This one was a “roadeo,” as in road crews competing.
Public Works hosted its seventh annual equipment roadeo, with operators putting their skills to the test with city of Wenatchee employees in a friendly competition.
“We have four events that the crew members and operators compete in,” said Jill FitzSimmons, Public Information Officer with Chelan County Public Works. “The first one is a tech challenge, it’s a written test that our mechanics participate in.”
FitzSimmons says the mechanics are known as the ‘unsung heroes’ in public works, working to keep everyone on the road throughout the year.
“We have three other competitions- the truck challenge, the backhoe and the loader competition,” FitzSimmons said. “The first place finisher in each of those events will go on to a state competition.”
This year the state competition will be hosted in Wenatchee at the American Public Works Association Conference.
“That will bring operators from all over the state to compete together and of course the winners at that level go on to nationals,” FitzSimmons said.
