Okanogan County fire district receives $1.8 million grant for training program

Okanogan County Fire District Number 6 has received a $1.8 million grant to implement a Firefighter Vocational Training Program.

The Bruno and Evelyne Betti Foundation of Lacey awarded the grant.

It will be administered through the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and will pay for the latest training materials, equipment and facilities.

The grant comes in two pieces.

First, it provides $1.3 million for the materials, equipment and facilities.

Second,, there is an additional $500,000 for scholarships, educational programs and the repair and replacement of equipment and manuals.

The destructive wildfires experienced in Okanogan County in recent years were cited in the grant award.

The money is dependent on the passage of a bond or levy to build a new district fire station to house the program.

“The district will need the support of the voters to make this opportunity happen,” said Fire Chief Cody Acord. Should everything fall into place, the training will be open to firefighters in Okanogan, Chelan, Grant and Douglas counties.
