A contractor on Monday began work on cleaning up a small amount of diesel fuel that spilled into Salmon Creek in Okanogan County after a snow plow truck went off the road and ended up partially in the creek.

The accident happened Sunday about 7 a.m. when the plow driver was backing off Salmon Creek Road at the intersection of Spring Coulee Road and slid on the ice into the creek.

It took two large tow trucks to get the snow plow off its side, back on the road.

The driver of the plow was not injured.

The state Department of Ecology is providing technical assistance at the cleanup site about four miles west of Omak.

Ecology praised first responders for addressing the diesel spill immediately. That included Okanogan County Public Works, Okanogan County Fire District 3, the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Department, and Okanogan County Emergency Management.
