Officials investigate cause of structure fire in Rock Island

A Rock Island family escaped unhurt after neighbors alerted them that their house was on fire. It happened around mid-morning Sunday when neighbors were chasing a pet dog and noticed the second floor of the Ohio Street residence on fire. Douglas County Fire District 2 Assistant Chief Brian Brett describes what crews found when  they got there…

“When firefighters arrived the back deck was on fire and fire was extending up through the roof… it had a metal roof and fire was running the attic and dropping down into the dining room area,” Brett said. “Crews were able to knock it down from the exterior and then get inside and extinguish the fire.”

Brett says no one was hurt. He said the fire was put out within about a half-hour after crews arrived. He says the home sustained significant interior damage but is still structurally sound. He said he’ll be on scene today investigating the cause.
