Officials identify pilot killed in Lake Chelan plane crash

The pilot killed in a Monday morning plane crash near the Chelan Airport has been identified as 68-year-old Kenneth W. VanAssche of Chelan Falls.

Chelan County Coroner Wayne Harris said VanAssche died of asphyxia and burns.

The plane burst into flames after crashing nose-down in an orchard near the airport about 6:30 a.m.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating. VanAssche was flying what’s referred to as an amateur-built JA30 Superstol, a NTSB spokesman said.
