O’Connell Could be 4th Ever Wenatchee Valley Draftee

Wenatchee native and WSU Graduate Cody O'Connell is hoping his name is called in the NFL Draft.

Wenatchee Grad O’Connell Awaits NFL Draft

WENATCHEE, WA – Today is the first round of the NFL Draft. While all the hype is over quarterbacks and which teams will draft which one, there’s a giant young man from Wenatchee just hoping his name is called… at all.

Cody O’Connell graduated from Wenatchee High School and played at Washington State University as a standout left guard. Nicknamed “The Continent”, he’s 6’9” and 360-pounds. He’s an All American and All Pac-12 offensive lineman and an Outland Trophy finalist. But he wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine and isn’t on a lot of people’s draft boards. So it’s a waiting game.

Now, if O’Connell does get the call sometime over the weekend, he would be the fourth person EVER who graduated from high school in the Wenatchee Valley to be drafted…
According to our “crack” research staff (Eric), there have been only three. Dean Derby of Leavenworth was drafted in the 5th round in the 1957 draft by the LA Rams. Jim Norton of Wenatchee was selected in the 3rd round by the 49ers in the 1965 draft. And Randy Hall of East Wenatchee was picked in the 13th round by the Baltimore Colts back in the ’74 draft. Our fingers are crossed for Cody O’Connell.

Let’s get to the Les Schwab Prep Scoreboard from yesterday…
In tennis Wednesday, the Wenatchee Panthers boy’s and girl’s teams swept cross river rival Eastmont 7-0 and 7-0.

Here’s what we have on tap for the prep schedule today…

King Felix Helps Mariners Down Chicago 4-to-3

Seattle came from behind to edge Chicago 4-3 in the final game of the three-game series…
Felix Hernandez surrendered a lead-off home run and a double and two runs in the first, but then settled down to allow just one more run in six innings to earn the victory. The Seattle offense got going in the 3rd as Jean Segura and Nelson Cruz hit RBI singles to tie the game at 2. Cruz delivered another RBI single in the 5th to re-tie the game at 3 and then Mike Zunino provided the game winning solo home run in the 6th. James Pazos and Juan Nicasio held the lead for Edwin Diaz, who struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 9th for his 10th save.

Seattle now heads to Cleveland today for the first of four games with the Tribe as James Paxton faces Mike Cleavinger.
