Weather 1-28-20

Northcentral Washington weather for today has drier air moving in this afternoon as the trough axis moves overhead. This coupled with some instability will produce afternoon showers, especially east of a line from the Tri-Cities to Ritzville to Wilbur. Under cloudy skies, all valley temps today will be in the upper 30’s and lower 40’s, so any snow that has fallen in the valleys is expected to melt. Showers will continue to decrease through the evening and overnight hours as the trough moves east and a shortwave ridge of high pressure moves in early Wednesday.

Given the recent rain and some partial clearing over Northcentral Washington overnight, we should see some fog develop in the morning. By noon or so tomorrow, the next weather system moves across southern British Columbia and brings a quick shot of rain and snow to the region. There is a 70% chance of rain tomorrow afternoon with high temperatures around 40 degrees.

For Thursday, expect cloudy skies, a 30% chance of rain showers with afternoon high temperatures in the lower 40’s.

By the end of the week, snow levels will be rising quite high, bringing precipitation in the form of rain for the lowlands and snow mostly in the higher elevations. The northern valleys and Waterville Plateau may have a rain-snow mix on Friday. Mild, above normal temperatures will continue through, and likely max out, on Saturday. By Friday and Saturday, temperatures have the potential to reach highs 10+ degrees above normal. Widespread high temperatures have the potential to reach the 50’s in much of the lowlands. Some of the lower Columbia Basin may even see high temperatures in the low 60’s. Friday and Saturday also look to be wet with a 60% chance of rain Friday and a 50% chance on Saturday with high temperatures near 50 degrees.

After a mild weekend, cooling temperatures will follow as a trough of low pressure drops down from the north on Sunday. The Wenatchee Valley will see partly cloudy skies on Sunday with a 30% chance of rain with highs in the mid 40’s. Even cooler on Monday under mostly sunny skies highs will top out in the upper 30’s.
