Kid Fire

U.S. Forest Service photo by Brian Campbell shows the Kid Fire burning near the Pacific Crest Trail.

A portion of the Pacific Crest Trail has been closed because of wildfires burning in the area, one of which has burned to within about three miles of the trail.

The affected area is the northern most of the PCT from Holman Pass North to the Canadian border.

Northbound hikers typically reach that area in September, so thousands are likely seeing their journeys cut short.

There are numerous fires burning in the forests near the Canadian border, with the Kid Fire in the Pasayten Wilderness Area the closest to the trail.

The U.S. Forest Service announced the trail closure Friday.
