New East Wenatchee roundabouts won’t be happening

Plans for two new roundabouts in East Wenatchee have been scrapped, said Mayor Steve Lacy.

The roundabouts had been planned for Ninth Street and Valley Mall Parkway and State Route 28th and Ninth Street.

Lacy said an updated Washington State Department of Transportation study shows signaled intersections make more sense financially.

Plans for the roundabouts had been put on hold earlier after estimated costs exceeded the state’s expectations.

Lacy said the Ninth Street and Valley Mall traffic signal will cost about $1.2 million, using federal money already secured. That will replace a four-way stop.

Those lights will be synched with the current lights at the highway and Ninth to ensure a smoother flow of traffic.

“We will be coordinating with WSDOT about other changes that will be made between those two intersections. Crosswalks and other issues that will be best for traffic flow, pedestrians and bike traffic through that area, Lacy said.
