New child abuse charges leveled at East Wenatchee mother

WATERVILLE — Both parents of a severely injured East Wenatchee infant are now charged with child abuse.

Douglas County prosecutors brought two charges of first-degree child assault Friday against Laura Elaine McCarver, 30, for her alleged part in injuries the baby suffered March 29. The child was just five weeks old when doctors treated him for a broken shinbone, a skull fracture, and multiple broken ribs consistent with child abuse.

On May 6, deputies arrested the baby’s father, 35-year-old Tyler Vance Metcalfe, on similar charges. Metcalfe allegedly told investigators the child fell off a bed. The baby was treated at Central Washington Hospital before transfer to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Deputies say after reviewing video footage from the home on Nelson Place, they found evidence that McCarver was with the child as little as 13 minutes before his injuries were reported.

Both parents are being held in the Okanogan County Jail on $500,000 bond.
