NCWLIFE Evening News February 4, 2019

Good evening and welcome to the NCWLIFE Evening News. I’m Grant Olson. Before we get to today’s top news stories, let’s take a quick look outside our weather window:

And now, a few of the stories we’re following for you tonight, Weather-related power outages were reported in parts of Douglas County this morning effecting more than 300 people. The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust has purchased its first piece of land in Douglas County, we will show you where, and, Getting around Seattle via State Route 99 changes with the new SR 99 tunnel, which opened this morning.

But first, we begin tonight. . .

Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones has joined a handful of other law enforcement officials in saying he will not enforce Washington’s new gun laws. County sheriffs in Benton, Klickitat, Stevens and Pacific counties, as well as the police chief in Republic, have also said they will not enforce I-1639, approved by state voters in November. Jones said a popular vote cannot overrule constitutional rights. . .

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett, Douglas County Sheriff Kevin Morris and Okanogan County Sheriff Anthony Hawley, while questioning the constitutionality of I-1639, stopped short last week of saying they would not enforce it. I-1639 requires background checks for purchases of semi-automatic rifles, raises the legal age to purchase one from 18 to 21, and imposes strict rules for storage of guns.

Weather-related power outages were reported in parts of Douglas County this morning. Douglas County PUD reported that 250 customers on the Waterville Plateau were without power this morning. The outage occurred at around 5:00 a.m. A second outage of about 60 customers in the McNeil Canyon area was reported about 7:00 a.m. Link Transit routes 1, 25 and 26 are using snow routes all day and some buses might be running late. Mansfield School District was closed today because of the snowy and cold weather conditions.

The Chelan-Douglas Land Trust has purchased its first piece of land in Douglas County.

The Land Trust recently purchased Spiva Butte Nature Preserve, a remote piece of property that is home to critical wildlife habitat to several sensitive species of plants wildlife and birds. The 1396 acres of land is in rural North Douglas County, which is also home to a large sage grouse population and important wetlands. There is no public access to the nature preserve at this time but public visitation will be available in the near future. Funding for the land purchase was made possible by the Icicle Fund, private donors and the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust.

Getting around Seattle via State Route 99 changes with the new SR 99 tunnel. That means new choices for drivers. This video shows what it’s like to drive NORTH into Seattle through the new tunnel. . .

The new SR 99 tunnel fully opened for traffic this morning, just in time for Seattle’s messy, snowy commute.

Coming up next, The Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced finalists for its 2018 Business of the Year and Non-profit of the Year awards. The Boy Scouts of America is no longer a boys only organization, and, A new first-of-its-kind attraction is coming to Slidewaters at Lake Chelan this summer. I’m Grant Olson and you’re watching the NCWLIFE Evening News.

Welcome back, and in other news…

The Wenatchee Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced finalists for its 2018 Business of the Year and Non-profit of the Year awards. The winners of the annual awards will be announced at the chamber’s banquet March 21st.

Business of the Year finalists are Salcido Connection, Cashmere Valley Bank and 501 Consultants.

For Non-Profit of the year, the finalists are the Washington State Tree Fruit Research Commission, the Chelan Douglas County Volunteer Attorney Services and Music Theatre of Wenatchee.

The Boy Scouts of America is no longer a boys only organization. As of last Friday girls are now allowed to join the club too. Girls between the ages of 11 and 17 can now join troops which will be all-female but connected to the traditional all-male troops. These linked troops might participate in the same activities and hold shared meetings; however, it will be up to each individual troop if they want to be associated or not. The Boy Scouts of American have taken the action to create a more inclusive organization In 2013, the group permitted gay scouts and abolished the policy banning gay scout leaders two years later. They also began accepting transgender youth in 2017.

A new first-of-its-kind attraction is coming to Slidewaters at Lake Chelan this summer.

Officials recently announced that the popular theme park will also include the largest deep-water stationary surf wave in the World. The 16-meter wave machine is built by a German company and Slidewaters is their first to be located in North America. The new Lakeside Surf ride is part of a 5 million dollar park expansion, which is being built in phases to include retail shops, beach volleyball and pickleball courts.

And that is a look at your local weather forecast, coming up next, tonight’s sports report with Eric Granstrom and more as the NCWLIFE Evening News continues right after this.

The New England Patriots are once again Super Bowl champions after a 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53 yesterday in Atlanta…

It will go down as the lowest scoring Super Bowl in history with just 16-points combined.  New England led 3-0 at half time and it was tied at 3 at the end of the third.  The only touchdown was a 2-yard run by Sony Michel with just over 7-minutes left in the game.

Julian Edelman was named the game’s MVP with 10-receptions for 141-yards.  The Rams offense could only muster 260 total yards as Bill Belichick dialed up a great defensive performance.  The Patriots sacked Jerrod Goff four times and picked him off on the only deep drive by the Rams into New England territory.

This is Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s sixth Super Bowl win together with the Patriots.

Of course, nearly as much is made of the Super Bowl commercials as the game itself.  USA Today did an overnight poll of its readers and the top five are…

5 – The Coach Who Wouldn’t Be Here by Verizon
4 – The Elevator by Hyundai
3 – We All Win by Microsoft
2 – Not Everything Makes the Cut by Amazon Alexa

And the number 1 commercial according to voters at USA Today… The 100 Year Game by the NFL…

We’ll get a glimpse of the rest of the top 5 commercials during Super Bowl 53 tomorrow morning on Wake Up Wenatchee Valley.

It was not such a super weekend for the Wenatchee Wild, dropping a game on the road in Penticton Friday and then another at home Saturday to Vernon…

On Friday at the Okanagan Events Centre, Penticton broke a 2-2 tie with Ryan Sandelin’s 25th goal of the season deep into the 3rd period.  The Vees added another empty net goal with seconds to play to make it a 4-2 final.  Chad Sasaki and Matt Goseiwski score the goals for Wenatchee.

On Saturday, the Wild was hoping the friendly confines of the Town Toyota Center would make the difference, especially on Guns N Hoses Night.  But it wasn’t to be as Vernon outscored Wenatchee 2-nothing in a shootout to win 2-1.

Wenatchee got on the board late in the 1st period with the Vipers countering shortly into the second.  The game would remain knotted at 1-1 through the third and an overtime to set up the shootout, Wenatchee’s 4th in the past 9 games.  Arch Ecker had the call on the Wenatchee Wild Hockey Network…

Wenatchee travels to Cowichan Valley Friday and then Victoria Saturday as the BCHL season winds down.

Congratulations to the Eastmont girls bowling team on yet another State Championship…

Eastmont won its third-consecutive state title Saturday by outpacing Pasco and Wenatchee with 7,477 pins…

So, incredibly, the state championship trophy returns to the Wenatchee Valley for the fourth-straight year.  Individually, we had four bowlers place in the top ten with Eastmont’s Alicia Hastings 4th and Skye Wilson 7th.  Wenatchee’s Emilee Groth was 9th and Hannah Johnson 10th.  Congratulations ladies on a job well done!

Going back to Friday and the Les Schwab Prep Girls Basketball Scoreboard…

Wenatchee won its first game of the year behind four impressive quarters of good basketball in a 55-38 win over Eisenhower.  Eastmont traveled to Davis and picked up a big 41-39 win.  Omak finished the Caribou Trail League season with a 47-37 win over Chelan.  Brewster beat Manson 72-25 and Waterville-Mansfield topped Bridgeport 66-35.

On the Les Schwab Prep Boys Basketball Scoreboard Friday…

Wenatchee had no trouble stopping Eisenhower 67-46.  Davis avenged an earlier loss to Eastmont, winning 84-73.  Omak beat Chelan 66-49.  It was Brewster downing Manson 79-38 and Bridgeport edged Waterville-Mansfield 60-52.

Turning to the Les Schwab basketball scoreboards on Saturday…

The Oroville girls beat Manson 41-40 and Lake Roosevelt edged Waterville-Mansfield 56-54.  On the boy’s side…

Oroville beat Manson 58-44.  And Lake Roosevelt took care of Waterville-Mansfield 66-26.

Eight wrestlers from Eastmont and Wenatchee will be heading to Regionals after qualifying at the district tournament at Eisenhower over the weekend…

Sunnyside won the team title with Wenatchee 4th and Eastmont 5th.  Adrian Vivanco took 3rd at 138-pounds.  The Wildcat’s Cesar Sitio was 2nd at 145-pounds.  Eastmont’s Landon McClune took 3rd at 152-pounds.  It was an all-Wenatchee final at 160-pounds as Jerdan Velazquez beat teammate Jason Briley for the district title.  Briley came back and placed 2nd.  Orlando Rodriguez placed 2nd at 170-pounds for the Panthers.  And it was Wenatchee’s Lucas Carranza beat Eastmont’s Max Prazer 5-2 to win the district title at 220-pounds.  Prazer came back to pin his opponent to take 2nd.  Regionals are this this weekend at Big Bend Community College.

Three local girls advanced to state out of the Region 4 Sub Regional at Eastmont High School Saturday…

Othello took first in the team scoring with Eastmont 2nd and Wenatchee 4th.  The Panther’s Kelsey Ibarra took 3rd at 105-pounds.  Her teammate Isabella Andreini placed 2nd at 130.  And Eastmont’s Joanna Bowman took 3rd at 135.

Here’s what we have coming up on the NCWLIFE Sports Schedule for the week…

Eastmont hosts Sunnyside tomorrow night with the girls at 5:45 and the boys to follow at 7:30.  Hockey Night Thursday features last Saturday’s Wenatchee Wild game against Merritt.  Then on Friday, it’s Moses Lake and Wenatchee as the Panther boys will try to wrap up the regular season Big 9 title.  The girls start it off at 5:30.

And, don’t forget Saturday is the Cashmere Valley Bank Royalty Selection Pageant for the 2019 Washington State Apple Blossom Festival.  We’ll have it live from Wenatchee High School’s Auditorium beginning at 6:30 with Eric Granstrom and Julie Agens Kuntz.

Thanks Eric. Recapping tonight’s top stories. . .
