National Guard deploys for NCW food distribution

Washington National Guard members help with a food bank distribution Thursday at the WEnatchee Community Center. Guard units have been deployed to Chelan, King and Pierce counties to help in readying and shipping food supplies for those in need during the COVID-19 crisis.

WENATCHEE — A deployment of 10 National Guard members arrived in Wenatchee this week to help with distributing needed food supplies to those displaced from work by the COVID-19 crisis.

Beyond the Wenatchee Valley, the Guard members are slated to carry supplies to residents in Waterville, Bridgeport and Mansfield. The deployment is part of a statewide mobilization, which has sent units to King and Pierce counties as well to pack and transport meals.

Thom Nees, whose organization Serve Wenatchee is among the distribution organizers, told NCWLIFE yesterday the Guard’s participation gives local food banks a wider reach.

“They will also help with a distribution on Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church,” Nees said. “.. The National Guard will be an important part of getting the boxes and the food distributed out into the two-county area.”
