Moses Lake man dies after car rolls into irrigation canal near Ephrata

A 33-year-old Moses Lake man was killed Sunday morning after his vehicle rolled into an irrigation canal about five miles southeast of Ephrata.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office said Michael Mendoza was driving north on W20 Canal Road when he tried to turn around but a rear tire slid over an embankment and the 2004 Mazda 6 rolled onto its top in the water-filled canal.

The sheriff’s office said it appears he couldn’t escape the vehicle and he was he found dead at the scene at about 6:30 a.m.

After the vehicle was pulled from the canal, it was discovered that Mendoza was not wearing a seat belt which could mean he unfastened it himself after the accident, the sheriff’s office said.\

The canal is at the east end of Road 8 Northwest.

The Grant County coroner will be conducting an autopsy.
