A man suspected of stabbing his mother to death was arrested in Malott Monday afternoon. The arrest came after a confrontation with deputies in the Okanogan River.
Jose Mejia, 34, reportedly tried to take a deputy’s gun during the river struggle.
The first report of the stabbing came at 2:44 p.m., in the area of Old Highway 97 and Central Street said Okanogan County Sheriff Tony Hawley.
But by the time they arrived, the suspect had fled on foot.
Witnesses pointed deputies to the area where Majia had fled.
Mejia was quickly found in the river and struggle ensued when deputies went in after him.
Mejia had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of hand injury before being jailed.
His 64-year-old mother, Juana Ferreria Demejia, died at the scene.
Hawley said thanks to the help of residents they had Mejia in custody within 20 minutes of receiving the report of the stabbing.
