A Moses Lake man was arrested Monday night after falling asleep in a car he had just stolen, police said.

It was not his first run-in with law enforcement.

Moses Lake Police arrested 48-year old Darrell Smith after a neighbor called to report a suspicious vehicle on Winona Street in Moses Lake.

Officers responded and found Smith asleep in the stolen car. Officers also found a black mask in the car, next to the screwdriver used to start the vehicle.

Smith gained some notoriety in 2010 when he fled the Grant County Courthouse.

He then stole a grain truck in downtown Ephrata, still wearing handcuffs.

He attempted to elude pursuing officers until he drove the truck off of SR-17 just past Randolph Road near Moses Lake. Smith ditched the truck and attempted to swim across the lake.

This was March and he was still wearing handcuffs.

Predictable, he sank, and had to be rescued by a Grant County deputy.

Smith was booked into the Grant County Jail Monday night on charges of possession of a stolen car and possession of burglar tools.
