Man arrested for robbery, attempted kidnapping at Okanogan coffee stand

A Yakima man was arrested Wednesday in Okanogan after allegedly attempting to rob a coffee stand and kidnap the barista.

The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office said at 3:10 p.m. Steven Mejia, 29, entered the Free Bird Coffee Stand on North 2nd Ave., first asking for water, then saying it was a robbery.

The 17-year-old female barista reportedly hid in the bathroom before being dragged out by Mejia.

By the time deputies, Omak Police and the Washington State Patrol responded to the robbery report Mejia had fled.

But it took just four minutes before he was found in an alley behind the Okanogan Post Office, the sheriff’s office said.

He was booked into the Okanogan County Jail awaiting charges for first-degree robbery and first-degree kidnapping.
