An Ellensburg man and his horse were rescued Saturday after falling down a ravine in the Blewett Pass area.

The Kittitas County Sherriff’s Office say 58-year-old Paul Mauer of Ellensburg and his horse were recovered in the area of Stafford Creek located about 20 miles northeast of Cle Elum.

Mauer was dropped off Thursday morning with the intent of taking a ride on his horse. When Mauer hadn’t returned by 9 p.m., his friend called law enforcement and reported him as missing.

The Kittitas County Search and Rescue team searched throughout Friday and located Mauer in the area of Cascade Creek, half a mile from the Ingalls Creek trail.

Eventually, Mauer was found 300 feet below the trail in a ravine with his horse.

Because of adverse conditions and approaching darkness, Mauer was not able to be recovered by personnel until Saturday.

Kittitas County Fire District 7 crews stayed on site through the night.

Neither Mauer nor his horse suffered any injury as a result of the accident and have returned home safely.
