LEAVENWORTH — Leavenworth firefighters and a U.S. Forest Service crew kept a brushfire to a minimum in a popular city park Wednesday.
The fire broke out about 3:09 p.m. on Blackbird Island, part of Leavenworth’s Waterfront Park complex. It started alongside one of the island’s hiking trails, and quickly spread through the underbrush.
Chelan County Fire District 3 crews had to pump water from the Wenatchee River, while Forest Service Crew 74 based in Leavenworth sent 20 members to dig a fireline. Assistant Chief Glen Brautaset says the fire was contained to about 2,400 square feet.
The incident is believed to be human-caused, possibly from a dropped cigarette.
