Hurt climber rescued in Pine Canyon

WATERVILLE — Rescuers went to the aid of an injured climber Thursday in Pine Canyon after a passing motorist phoned for help.

Douglas County Undersheriff Tyler Caille said Jon Davis, 38, of East Wenatchee injured his leg during a climb in the rocky canyon, about six miles west of Waterville off Highway 2. A passing driver phoned RiverCom about 9:17 p.m., initially reporting a brushfire.

Caille said it’s not clear why the incident was reported as a fire, but Caille said it was after dark, and Davis may have used a flashlight or a flame to signal for help.

“Either way, that’s the initial report that started this incident,” Caille said.

Davis was not able to climb down from his position, and rescuers from Douglas County Fire District 1 and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office had to ascend to reach him. Members of the Chelan County High Angle Rescue Team also assisted.

The rescue took hours, completing well after midnight, Caille said. EMTs took Davis to Central Washington Hospital for treatment.
