WASHINGTON DC- Funding was denied for a proposal to transport grizzly bears to the North Cascades following the approval of HR 6147.
Representative Dan Newhouse drafted an amendment that denies the funding for the US Department of Interior, putting a halt to the scrutinized plan to relocate grizzly bears into the region.
Newhouse said he was pleased the House approved the bill for rural areas of Central Washington.
“Transporting grizzly bears to the North Cascades would have a harmful impact on rural residents,” Newhouse said. “Federal agencies must take sound science into account as well as the input of the local community, and local residents’ voices must be heard.”
The legislation also included funding for wildfire prevention, language to remove Gray Wolves from the federal endangered species list and provisions for the critical North Cascades Smokejumper Base in Winthrop.
