Heavy snow, spinouts lead to the closure of Stevens Pass

Multiple spinouts have led to the closure of Stevens Pass in both directions this afternoon as holiday travel across the mountains begins to pick up.

It’s snowing heavily on the pass and the roadway covered with compact snow, slush and ice, according to the Washington Department of Transportation.

WSDOT said there is no estimated time for reopening the pass.

The forecast calls for the snow to continue tonight on Stevens and turn to showers by Friday.

Currently, Snoqualmie Pass is open in both directions, with WSDOT reporting the roadway is bare and wet with snow and slush in places. Chains are required on all but all-wheel vehicles westbound. Traction tires are advised on eastbound vehicles.

There is a mix of rain and snow with the forecast on Snoqualmie calling for continued snow tonight and rain on the pass Friday.

It’s also snowing on Blewett Pass but the pass is fully open with compact snow and ice on the roadway and traction tires advised.

The forecast calls for more snow through tonight and Friday.
