EPHRATA — A 56-year-old Ephrata man allegedly managed an illegal gambling operation that took bets on fighting roosters.
Grant County sheriff’s deputies arrested Reymundo Garcia on Wednesday morning in a raid in the 9000 block of Road J.4 Northwest near Winchester. Deputies said it was the culmination of a year-long investigation into illegal cockfights, in which gamblers bet on the outcomes.
Investigators found 13 roosters they said were physically modified for fighting, as well as quantities of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and psilocybin mushrooms. Grant County animal control agents euthanized the roosters.
Garcia faces potential drug, gambling and animal cruelty charges. He remained in the Grant County Jail on Thursday. The investigation involved officers from the Washington State Gambling Commission, Grant County Interagency Narcotics Enforcement Team, Grant County Sheriff’s Office and the Quincy Police Department.
