Fatal wreck claims retired Wenatchee police officer


ROCK ISLAND – The Douglas County Sheriff’s office responded to a single vehicle fatal wreck on Batterman Road shortly before 9am this morning.  They found a 2015 GMC Sierra approximately 20 feet off the road. Investigators said the vehicle appeared to be traveling towards Rock Island and crossed the center line. It then went off the road and struck an embankment.

Fatal Wreck

Deputies found 70-year-old, retired Wenatchee police officer, Ken Manke and started life-saving efforts. Deputies began CPR and deployed their automated external defibrillator until EMS and firefighters arrived. Despite best efforts Manke was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is not known why the vehicle went off the road and the investigation is continuing.

Douglas County Sheriff Harvey Gjesdal issued a short press release and said “he will be missed and we send deepest condolences to his friends and family.”

Sgt. Edgar Reinfeld said Manke was “a legendary figure in the Wenatchee Police Department and will be for many, many years to come. The news is a blow to the community.”
