A Malaga area woman died today in a house fire. The cause was under investigation. Chelan County Fire District One crews responded to the fire at the West Malaga Road home soon after it was called in around 1:45 PM.
Chelan County One Chief, Mike Burnett reported the woman died while in her bedroom. Firefighters were unable to access the victim’s room due to the intense heat and flames. Burnett says the victim’s husband was in the garage when the fire started. He received minor injuries after trying to enter the home in an attempt to rescue his wife but he did not require medical aid.
The cause of death will determine after an autopsy is performed on Monday. Coroner Wayne Harris says the victim’s name will not be released until after the cause of death is confirmed.
Chief Burnett said the death affected some of his firefighters, many of whom are volunteers who have never seen a fire-caused death. He says the District will provide counseling to those who need it.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. The residence was located in an orchard and posed little to no threat of spreading.
