Elementary school becomes a firefighting central

WENATCHEE – Sunnyslope Elementary School took on a whole new look and purpose in the past week as firefighters and support personnel moved in.

The firefighters were dispatched to fight the nearby Rocky Reach Fire, which ignited Friday, July 13.

The hastily assembled camp serves as a base of operations for the firefighting effort and includes tents, dining facilities, portable showers and more.  The meals, which have earned praise from the crews, are prepared by inmates.

Almost 250 people from numerous federal, state and local agencies are based at the school. After their shifts working the fire lines firefighters return to the school for food, beverages, showers and sleep.
