PESHASTIN – Chelan County Commissioner Keith Goehner commented today on the emergency declaration announced last week by the Icicle/Peshastin Irrigation District. The action was taken in response to potential problems from last year’s Jack Creek forest fire on Eight Mile Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness.
The fire-scarred land around the lake is highly vulnerable to erosion and mudslides creating the potential for downstream flooding. Commissioner Goehner has been involved as a member of the Icicle Working Group, a collaboration of different forest user groups, to discuss water issues as they relate to the Alpine Wilderness Lakes.
The Irrigation District is currently doing an environmental assessment of the project with hopes of making the necessary repairs to the dam.
