East Wenatchee woman struck, killed while trying to help deer on Highway 28

An East Wenatchee woman was struck and killed last night on Highway 28 near the Palisades Road intersection while helping an injured deer off the highway.

The Washington State Patrol says that at 6 p.m., Taylor Fukuzawa, 28, was in the eastbound lane of the highway attempting to help the deer when she was struck by a 2021 International box truck that was unable to stop in time to avoid striking her.

Fukuzawa was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck, 58-year old Paul L Hesselgesser of Selah, was not injured.

The State Patrol says drugs or alcohol was not a factor.

Traffic on Highway 28 was stopped for three and a half hours. The State Patrol said there are no charges against Hesselgesser.
