East Wenatchee explores options for Gateway Project

The City of East Wenatchee hosted an open house last night at the City hall in East Wenatchee. The open house was a display of two proposed renovations to the entrance to East Wenatchee’s Downtown Area.

The City plans to redevelop the property that was formerly occupied by a Texaco gas station at the intersection of 9th Street and Valley Mall Parkway into a new public space. The city and Washington State Department of Transportation are also replacing the existing intersections of 9th and Valley Mall Parkway and 9th Street and SR 28 Sunset Highway into roundabouts.

Both Projects would provide a safer and easier access location to the Loop trail and provide public restrooms for the East Wenatchee Side of the Trail. SCJ Alliance is the company contracted by the city for the consultation and development plan for both project options A & B.

During an online survey conducted by SCJ Alliance of over 1,000 citizens, their was strong support for moving the Gateway project further with over 53% of residents indicating they would like to have a public park within 1 to 3 miles of their residence.

Gateway Project A would mean that renovations would turn the space into a park amphitheater combination. Stylized with wooden benches and widened paths would create a peaceful environment with a view of mission ridge in the background. Option B takes a more Loop Trail themed approach where it provides a parking lot with 10 spaces for ease of access to the trail.

The property would be a turfed area with public restrooms and a water feature that while running can be used to reduce motor vehicle noise off the highway.
