The driver of an SUV on Highway 97 near Orondo somehow escaped serious injury early Tuesday after his vehicle struck a rock embankment, rolled and came to a rest on its top on the highway.
Douglas County Fire District 4 had to extricate 26-year-old Jesse Holm of Waterville from the vehicle as it was leaking gas.
Jim Oatey, district chief, said it appeared the vehicle left the roadway into the northbound ditch about a mile south of Orondo at 12:42 a.m., struck the rock embankment and rolled before ending up in the southbound lane, blocking traffic for about 45 minutes.
Holm, who was cited in the wreck, was alone in the SUV and was wearing his seatbelt.
He was treated at the scene, then taken to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee by his mother, said Trooper John Bryant of the Washington State patrol.
